SHEEKI SOMALI - or The Man Who Was Afraid of Everything

“Come to Somalia; not a pirate in sight…”
Aisha has been in Harrow for ten years, and for the last six month as an in-patient in the local psychiatric ward.
Unwell, unhappy and alone, she refuses to speak. No-one can reach her. But one day she receives a surprise
visit from Somali folk-legend Igad Cigal the greatest coward in the land. He offers her – and all the other
patients – a chance to travel to the burning deserts of Somaliland, where in the nomads’ huts, stories unfold,
poems are told and songs are sung…and where he thinks she just might be able to heal.
A journey through the history and landscapes of the Somali consciousness. Harrow’s Somali citizens tell
hilarious tales, startling anecdotes and poignant memories from folk, historical and personal perspectives.
Performed by a professional and community cast of actors and storytellers and featuring the legendary Somali
musicians Fuad Omar and Saed Hussein, SHEEKO SOMALI! is the result of a year-long project run by Mind in
Harrow to improve mental health and wellbeing through performing arts.
Then, after the performance, join us for some delicious refreshments – Somali style!
One of the core experiences of displaced people across the world has been that of mental distress and illness.
The same is true for the Somali community in Britain. An important objective of Sheeko-Somali is to create
understanding of that particular aspect of Somali experience, both among Somalis themselves and among the
resident community.
