Bulbul 2013 Following the sell-out success of Bulbul 2012, we’re really excited to announce Bulbul 2013 our second annual playwriting competition for new writers. We’re looking for four 30-minute plays that engage with the Arab world. This year’s theme is: Crying over the ruins We’re going right back to the ancient poets as they stand nostalgically at the deserted campsites. How you respond to this is entirely up to you. All we ask is that your work is courageous, displays a unique voice, a strong storytelling element and a cohesive narrative. The deadline for submission is 31st May 2013. The winning entries will be performed by a professional cast at Brighton’s Nightingale Theatre in...

We cannot hope to programme all of these. For this reason your ability to meet the criteria is extremely important. PilotNights provide a space where artists making devised theatre can develop their practice in an informal and supportive atmosphere. Originally set up to support West Midlands based artists PilotNights now accept applications nationally. PilotNights believe firmly that in order to support regional development it is as important to bring in theatre makers as it is to book regional work. However,...

I am Trustee of an organisation that provides legal advice and representation to people affected by immigration legislation in Manchester (mainly asylum seekers at the moment). We would like to put on a modest exhibition, hopefully in time for Refugee Week 2013, showing how former clients have made successful lives for themselves in Manchester once they have won refugee status. I would not have difficulty in accessing suitable stories but have no experience in setting up an exhibition. Counterpoints Arts gets involved as Parliament Week comes to London! Counterpoints Arts, the organisation behind Platforma, is joining in the celebrations of democracy by encouraging people to take part in Parliament Week 2012, an annual national week to build greater awareness of and engagement with parliamentary democracy in the UK. Counterpoints Arts (www.counterpointsarts.org.uk) runs a range of arts and cultural projects, one of which is Simple Acts, a participatory programme that encourages everyone to take simple actions and help change perception of refugees and migrants in this country. We have recently received funding from Arts Council England and the National Lottery to continue the development of the Platforma Regional Hub Network in England. Platforma Regional Hub Co-ordinators will be working in each of the English regions to develop opportunities for artists from refugee backgrounds and provide them with career development support. The aim is to use the Regional Networks to help these artists reach new audiences and gain more opportunities in the mainstream arts sector. There will also be a new focus on linking up with Refugee Week. Each Regional Hub will seek new partners from organisations involved in Refugee Week, and find new performance opportunities for Refugee Week 2013. If you would like to know more...
