Fair Trade: Material Matters
Fair Trade: Material Matters is an ongoing collaborative project that started in 2007. I collect carbon copies of self portraits and stitch them onto undyed recycled blankets using woad dyed yarn. The work is a comment about the value placed on textiles in the world of art and art dealers.
In each venue the work cvisits there is a work station where people can draw their self portaits. Workshops are run alongside, topics include 'stitch and expression' and 'material world'. These include discussion and conversations about use and production of textiles and fashion.
This work was launched at the Moscow Biennale, 2007 and has been shown at The Sainsbury Centre, Norwich UK: 'Shed and Half' Gallery London: RISC, Reading Berkshire: Babylon Gallery, Ely, Cambridgeshire
The online work is at http://fairtradematerialmatters.org/
